Otherwise referred to as mooring clears, Boat Cleat are fixtures that are used to secure vessels to docks. Ideally, Boat Cleat should be sturdy, resistant to corrosion, and securely positioned on areas of the boat that offer optimal functionality.
What size Boat Cleat do I need?
Generally, manufacturers recommend just slightly under one inch of Boat Cleat for every 1/16-inch of line diameter , which means you need a six-inch cleat for 3/8-inch line, an eight-inch cleat for 1/2-inch line, and a 10-inch cleat for 5/8-inch line.
How many cleats does a boat have?
At the very minimum, you should have three Boat Cleat on both the port and starboard sides of your vessel. Remember, every dock is different, and you rely on cleats to keep your boat as safe and secure as possible when it's tied up.
When it comes to selecting a type of dock cleat, one thing to keep in mind is that many of these designs aren’t necessarily better than any of the others, they are simply based on personal preference. When it comes to strength, most of the cast boat cleats are the traditional horn style dock cleats, and generally the strongest and most popular.
